After Tropical Storm Helene, VDH urges people to stay away from natural bodies of water

After Tropical Storm Helene dropped inches of rain on parts of Virginia last week, the Virginia Department of Health is advising citizens to avoid natural bodies of water statewide. The advisory comes as a result of the heavy rains washing debris and pollution into local waterways. Pet, livestock and wildlife wastes, and untreated wastewater from sewage treatment plants that are overloaded by an excess of rainwater can all end up in natural waters used for recreation and pose risks to human health, according to the agency.
