AARP Virginia calling attention to food insecurity
In anticipation of September as Hunger Action Month, AARP Virginia is working to increase awareness about food insecurity and the resources available to help older adults in the commonwealth afford healthy and fulfilling lives. According to the organization, approximately 1 in 10 older adults in Virginia do not have consistent access to enough food. Many of those seniors are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits, which can help them afford affordable food for an active lifestyle but only 29% of adults 60 or older who are eligible actually participate.
