Virginia Defenders to host 3 events to commemorate 225th anniversary of Gabriel's Rebellion

The Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality will be hosting three events to commemorate the 225th anniversary of Gabriel’s Rebellion. The events will start Aug. 30 with a community gathering from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Spring Park in Lakeside, the site at which an enslaved man named Gabriel attempted to organize a massive rebellion against slavery on the same date in 1800. A storm and subsequent betrayal ended the plans before they could materialize, and Gabriel and 25 others ultimately were hanged.
