Belmont to host 1940s-era scramble, other events to commemorate 75ht anniversary of Snead's victory
Belmont Golf Course in Lakeside will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Sam Snead's victory there in 1949 PGA Championship with a throwback event May 31. The tournament, which was played at the course then known as Hermitage Country Club, remains the only major golf championship played in the state of Virginia. Snead defeat Johnny Palmer 3 and 2 in the 36-hole match play final. The victory gave Snead the first two legs of golf's grand slam, following his Master win in April.
